I would LOVE to see Camille Paglia on here. I completely disagree with much that she said about penis worship, but she is fascinating to listen to and ferociously intelligent.

Just a quick point on CP and marriage. I felt as you both did about marriage as an institution, but we wanted to celebrate all the years we'd been together, to make a public declaration AND to have the same protection in law as heterosexual people. One aspect of being married that had not occurred to us was how we are then perceived by the mighty institutions. We never, ever used the word 'wife' to describe each other, for all the obvious historical associations, but on the occasion of Annie's first consultant oncologist appointment, she introduced me as her wife. From that day on, I was treated with utmost respect, included in all discussions re : treatments etc. I don't know what instinct propelled her to introduce me thus, but I had to reluctantly acknowledge that it made a huge difference in those circles.

BTW, apart from with our close family and a few pals who were around when our daughter was born, we didn't discuss which of us was the biological mother, at our daughter's request. It became very clear to her at a very young age, that hierarchical distinctions were waiting to be applied, as her young friends would ask, 'But, who's your real mum?' She always knew which of us was her biological mum, as we did. We had fought for, and eventually won joint parental responsibility, so shared equal status in law, but, say in medical situations, when it could be clinically significant, we would tell them which of us gave birth.

Utterly disgusted by the whole Helen Joyce episode. There are some truly sick fucks in the world. How close did they have to be to read what was on Helen's phone? Creeps.

Great podcast. Much food for thought. Thanks both.

Ah, Lesbian Lines - surely a great story collection to be published? I volunteered on the Line in my UK city in the 1990s and it was such a worthwhile experience - all those weekly phoneline sessions in a cold damp semi-derelict building, never mind the collective decision-making... Women's lives, fears, hopes, fantasies, loneliness, energy - all there. As well as meeting women who were lesbian but knew nobody (we had strict protocols for that), and were often very afraid of coming out, we introduced them to other lesbians - Young Lesbian Project, Black Lesbian Group, Older Lesbian Network, Lesbian Social Group, Dyke Hikes, etc. We also had a file of (necessarily very secret) lesbian and gay contacts in different jobs - teachers, police, social workers, doctors, etc. There was a lot of underground/ out of sight lesbian stuff then - 5-a-side football, pool league, tea dances, local campaigns, even a Sunday Sewing group! Some of which were vehicles for other (less legal) activity. We'd formed (before my time) as a lesbian-feminist break from the local Friend Helpline - remember those? There were lots of difficulties and conflict, but really great community - lesbian funded, lesbian run, lesbians benefitted. Thanks for the reminder

I agree having Camille Paglia as a guest would be excellent.

Describing oneself as ‘gender apathetic’ in tricky work/woke situations might be useful🤔. Sums me up, particularly with the first word removed.

I'll join the chorus of PLEASE INVITE PAGLIA, and go one step further: maybe she still answers this email https://www.uarts.edu/staff-directory/cpaglia

New post on the Terry Practchett Discworld site:

"Someone in an entirely irrelevant group just confessed to being pansexual. Apparently it means the person loves frying pans."

You've started something Julie

Isn’t most of the world gender apathetic?😂 The next time my daughter and her trans-identifying adult male son call me out for not using the she:her pronouns for him. I’ll be ready with a medical reference that says I can identify as gender apathetic😂 please Doc Stock post the reference for that.

Cambridge Lesbian Line reference brought memories flooding back - of the Cambridge scene in the early 1980s... Friday nights at the 451 Club. Upstairs at the Dog and Partidge on Newmarket Road. Great times! Such a mix of women - including occasional invasions by dykes from neighbouring American air bases. I miss it, in some ways.
