Hilarious episode!

On the non-marriage marriage, I hope the guests honored the invitation by declining it.

C-word afflicted or sleep deprived, still as warm, funny and entertaining as ever. Thanks Julie and Kathleen. Always a great start to the weekend.

“Knock Three Times” was a favourite at the Gateways Club in the early 1970s which might account for its lingering popularity!

Listened whilst on train to Manchester. Guffawing and startling other passengers. The covid disco piece was so funny. Love you both. Hope DocStock is fully recovered and that La Bindel has managed to sleep 💜

Thankyou for brightening up my Sunday morning 😊

Regarding the last item about queer cuisine - I was reminded of an article I saw a couple of years ago about Queer Gardening, in the Unison (trades union) members’ magazine. Unison used to be NALGO in the good old days before the demise of everything and it had a respectable and active L+G group. I receive the general Unison magazine and a LGBT one - Out in Unison - which is pretty much all T these days. The gardening article was in the general one, which has a LGBT feature each month, so that was their important LGBT article that month.

The article contained no mention of the eroticism of orchid flowers (a la Georgia O’Keefe paintings) or of Sissinghurst Garden (planted by Vita Sackville-West). The only link with queer appeared to be that the writer of the article enjoyed the shock reactions he created by frequenting garden centres dressed as an AGP whilst buying big plants for his garden.

If he’d called it Gay Gardening at least it would have had a bit of alliteration and he could have interviewed those gay men who spend a large percentage of their wealth on garden design, or even highlighted the disparity in the average incomes of lesbians compared to gay mens’, which would have had some relevance to a TU magazine.

I’ll try and dig out (sorry) the article, or maybe not ……

Not sure whether to blame lack of sleep, or infrequency of social media use, or both, for the fact that - following Kathleen's comment about grifting men 'slipping into [her] DMs' - I spent several too many seconds grappling with a mental image of her and a big bearded bloke awkwardly sharing a pair of Doc Marten boots... [Slaps self round face and heads for kettle]. Thanks for another splendidly cheering and illuminating hour, both.

oh dear

The hippo story raises all that stuff about animals and humans and homosexuality being 'proven' because two male penguins or two female albatrosses formed a bond and raised a chick; or trans-ness being 'proven' because clownfish or Moray eels 'change sex' during their lifetime (they are actually hermaphrodite, so they're not 'changing sex' but exhibiting different aspects of their dual-sexual capacity at different points in their life cycle or in response to their environment); or some other fantastical projection being appropriated e.g. from seahorse gestation behaviour to human behaviour ... The world of animals and other creatures is fascinating, sometimes extraordinary and sometimes just purposeful or even dull. The world of humans likewise. We can appreciate one without trying to superimpose it on the other.

Is this whole idea of 'queering' everything just a contemporary re-naming of critique, investigation, discussion, etc - sometimes without the intellectual rigour required?

I also missed Doc Stock in Lisbon - I hope the planned speech will be held elsewhere! Hard agree on the culture warrior grifter dudes - though there were fewer of them than in Denver, at least... Many serious and interesting talks as well. I think the "wider lens" or "bigger picture" is a good idea, I just think the speakers could be vetted a bit more for actual knowledge on the topic. I suppose certain names draw a certain audience needed for funding, but I also think it's really bad pr for Genspect.

This is an extreme conference-heavy month for me. I just got back from SEGM in Athens, where I kept accidentally ending up in the company of Alex Byrne (no complaints), and will soon head to London for LGBA. Hope to see you there!

Good morning Julie and Kathleen! Enjoyed this podcast as I do all of them. Thank you. And happy birthday coming up soon! Continued best! As I listened to you talk about the academic articles, I remembered some data I heard quoted and wanted to share it with you in case there is something interesting to discuss. It is about marriage and divorce rates in same-sex couples in comparison to opposite sex couples. Here is it for the UK: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/divorce/bulletins/divorcesinenglandandwales/2022.

I love how chaotic, (lesbian chaos?) this episode was!

As someone who LOVES disco, but was born after the era, I would love some lesbian disco recommendations. There is definitely a playlist waiting to be born here!

I feel like I could go on a massive rant about how much I loathe the word "queer" and the "queering" of things. It's fucking nonsense. But I do enjoy you two ripping the shit out of it. ❤️
