As an Aussie it’s tough to hear anyone say they don’t like bushwalking (hiking)!! Julie, you gotta come bushwalking with us lesbians in Australia! We are so spoilt with the bush and rainforest here.

ah I live in Sydney actually and I love bushwalking, but what is up with all of these groups going early in the morning when any reasonable person would be fast asleep? :D Petition to start an afternoon women only bushwalk community where we finish with wine 🥳

I’m with Julie. My idea of camping is a hotel without room service.

We’ve done some long-distance walks in England (ex Hadrian’s Wall, Kennet Avon Canal) & had a wonderful time. Especially enjoy seeing so few people. In the U.S. a comparable walk generally requires tent, sleeping bag, all food, & the plastic shovel. England is far more civilized – always a pub at the end & often at the midpoint & indoor plumbing. (Hope I don’t risk losing my Dyke card for this.)

It is so relaxing to spend some of Friday with the two of you. The hiking conversation was a particular delight. My mate is British (I am US). I don’t know how it is now, but I was amazed to discover the expansive countryside walking made possible in England because of the ancient and preserved rights of way. So much of it does not require arduous ups and downs, yet one gets these huge views over the countryside—and, as someone else has noted, there are always pubs along the way, so no need to schlep food along, if desired. Julie, I hope you feel better soon, and thanks to you both for just being your delightful, engaging selves!

I haven’t listened yet, and the link won’t open for me, but am I right in thinking the Lesbian Fashion (again) piece is really a Kristen Stewart (again) piece? Kathleen? 🤣🤣

Your discussion of hiking and camping was hilarious. Like the other Aussie above I’m going out on a limb to say you really haven’t lived if you haven’t been bushwalking in Australia. Springtime in Western Australia is absolutely stunning with thousands of wildflowers and you will see incredible scenery in every state. Beaches white Snow White sand and crystal clear water, magnificent gorges, Indigenous rock art, beautiful sunsets, rainforests and deserts. So much is best seen on a walk.

I spent 12 months in 2021 driving around the country in a campervan, staying in National Parks, free roadside stops, occasional caravan parks. I have my own toilet and shower on board and an oven to make pizza and muffins.

On one 10km walk outside Alice Springs I only encountered 4 other people walking in a group. To me it was a quintessential lesbian experience. Adventuring on my own, not afraid or worrying about anything.

We have a Facebook Group, Van Dykes with almost 5000 members. We share photos, stories, and tips, e.g. where to go for good honest service and repairs. Often lesbians meetup with other Van Dykes travelling in the same area or locals where we’re passing through, and a few times a year there are bigger gatherings. We go canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing. And some of the women who either don’t have vans or prefer a bit more comfort, stay in cabins. If a woman has the misfortune of having an accident, a post to the group and someone will be able to help.

Julie, you don’t know what you’re missing. Although I no longer camp in a tent, I will finally add that sex is always better under canvas, or even under the stars if you’re in a secluded spot and the weather is good.

Another VD member here (newish though). Although, I’m a boat dyke who, when I get to my permanent berth, wants to do some car camping. 😻

Aah. A boat dyke!

I’m an airplane pilot dyke. We all don’t dress alike.

What is the classic lesbian car in the UK? Obviously not directing this at Julie since she’s the only lesbian in the world that can’t drive.

Top California lesbian vehicles that should be sold with a free bumper sticker that says “I love cats and I vote”: Subarus (I’ve had 5), Toyota Dykomas (I have one), Honda Fits, Honda CRVs, Toyota Priusi. I’m curious if there are other international dyke vehicle cultures where cars are accessible (I acknowledge this is not a universally accessible phenomenon among lesbians).

Kathleen, if you do have your genome sequenced, you can request to have your data removed from the database after you get your analysis. I don’t know any scientists who 1) gets DNA done by a public company or if they do 2) they do not leave their data in the database. Remember everyone in your family can betraced forever. we don’t know the future I don’t want my DNA in nobody’s database.

We recommend a series on amazon prime called Deadloch! Lesbians, murders, Tasmania, lots of fun! (be warned re lots of stereotypes).

Yup! Loved Deadloch. Will they come up with another series??? Loved it! The other series that's brilliant is True Detective: Night Country Season 4. It's available in UK on SKy Atlantic. Two strong women (Jodie Foster & Kali Reis) investigating the disappearance of a group of scientists (all men) working in a remote lab in Alaska as well as the disappearance of an indigenous woman years before. Written & directed by Issa Lopez. Brilliant women-centred narrative. Both women supposed to be straight, but so NOT straight acting! Won't give spoilers here. Very satisfying ending :))) K & J should review this if they're interested.

I’m speaking up for Hiking Dykes and Another example of loss of lesbian-only spaces (it’s not just bars!)

Dykes who like hiking in groups generally do not want “a bloke tagging along behind” because we enjoy actual lesbian company 😊 If we’re not bothered, we can join Ramblers or whatever! But yes there were bmany lesbian walking/hiking groups in UK. Sadly some have gone underground bcs of targeting by trans activists so can’t promote to potential new members - maybe lesbians new to an area, or newly out. Or just discovering the joy of walking with other dykes! It’s a social thing as well as an activity 🥾🤗

I'm with Julie on TV (and cinematic) sex; please bring back the fade-to-black and the morning-after cig. That said, I am so out of touch with contemporary pop culture that when you two started on "Bridgerton," I -- a Yank -- thought, well, another British TV segment. Hopeless.

I remain perplexed by the need to gay- or lesbian-identify into hiking or other outdoor activity. I worked for REI -- a big outdoor chain in the United States -- which, during its progressive and now complete capture by "woke" sold rainbow logo "Outside with Pride" shirts. Color me confused, as I never felt Nature discriminating against my gay self.

Because you make me laugh each week, I'm reciprocating with this link to a marvelous 1999 New Republic article, "The Professor of Parody" by Martha C. Nussbaum, about Judith Butler's writing. KS is no doubt already familiar with it:

https://newrepublic.com/article/150687/professor-parody

An excerpt: "One is given the impression of a mind so profoundly cogitative that it will not pronounce on anything lightly: so one waits, in awe of its depth, for it finally to do so. In this way, obscurity creates an aura of importance. It also serves another related purpose. It bullies the reader into granting that, since one cannot figure out what is going on, there must be something significant going on ...."

You could always have subscribers, send in video snippets of themselves announcing your show's tagline...be another way to entice subscribers and let us have a look see at eachother. Give Kathleen a break and it would be very entertaining. We could say our first names, location, and then "this is the lesbian project podcast.." just like Saturday Night Live has different guests introduce the show! It would be very very entertaining.
