Well, possibly one of the widest ranging podcasts you've given us. I think someone should write an academic paper exploring the range of expressions on Julie's face, as Kathleen reads from various deep dives into gender madness. Priceless.
Incidentally, Margaret Qualley played the title role in the very excellent Netflix mini series Maid. Her mother, Andie McDowell, also played her mother, very much against type. They were both brilliant, and I would highly recommend Maid to anyone who hasn't seen it. I saw the trailer for Drive away dolls and couldn't decide whether to see it, or not. After your review, I might give it a go.
Julie, you've missed the connection between your friendship with JKR, and Judith Butler not mentioning your name. Throughout Harry Potter's extended, terrifying story, his arch enemy, his nemesis, was 'he who shall not be named'. Her silence is a way of associating you with evil personified. (Well, it makes as much sense as her writing does!!)
Keep up the good work, sisters.
BTW, I watched the excellent CAN-SG conference on live stream. Surely, many people will have watched the entirely sensible, practical and fact based discussions, and wondered what on earth all the palaver outside was about. The more they keep showing us who they are, the more people will believe them. It must've been really frightening as they tried to batter the door down.✊✊✊
Your “maiden voyage” into academic papers was hilarious. Was this thing peer-reviewed by fruit flies, or what? Also on the Butler book, another very good take-down was by Sarah Ditum in the London Times:
Here’s a quote: “In all the verbosity you could almost miss how insulting Butler is to female victims of male violence. But it’s there. After a section on JK Rowling, Butler writes: “Living in the repetitive temporality of trauma does not always give us an adequate account of social reality.” In other words, women who have been abused (which includes Rowling) cannot be trusted. No wonder Butler doesn’t want to identify as a woman: she doesn’t seem to like them very much.”
Fruit flies, poor babies, are regarded as pests here and, when I was kid, we couldn't take fruit over state borders for fear of ruining crops. Was that academic writing real? OMG. Let fruit flies be fruit flies. Let's not ruin a still beautiful world by queering it.
Fruit flies are an absolute pest in Australia, and my home state (South Australia) is the only fruit fly free area.
Due to the community objecting to their gardens being doused in bucket loads of pesticides, in order to control outbreaks, we now breed STERILE fruit flys!
Sterile fruit flies interrupt the reproduction cycle (obviously 😻) and kill off the outbreak.
Our intrepid author has failed to include these poor flies in her analysis of the “queering of death” and the gay fruit fly sex MUST be happening because sterile fruit flies probable have no pherenomes 🙃
She missed that gem because she did her "research" in Sweden and has absolutely no connection to Australia - the "queer death studies" team likely had to look far and wide for a journal accepting their special issue proposal...
Tara Mehrabi is at Karlstad, one of Sweden's too many new, tiny universities (former polytechnics and similar gaining university status for prestige). Her PhD is from Linköping, another small, fairly recent university where the gender studies department is particularly bonkers and fond of asterisks and long compound words. Her career in "queer death studies" doesn't really seem to have taken off after her postdoc...
I thought it would be easy to find silly academic articles for your series but I'm sharing Doc Stock's experience that the stupidest ones are more infuriating and/or depressing than amusing. Perhaps this one, which relates vaguely to the NHS survey? I didn't find an open access article so I'm linking to this free resource which has a reference at the bottom: https://www.queensu.ca/psychology/van-anders-lab/assets/docs/SCTteaching.pdf
If fruit flies are engaging in same-sex relationships is anyone studying whether there is a risk of them becoming extinct? Will fruit flies then be added to the endangered species list? Is there a David Attenborough documentary being planned. Food for thought.
Another great episode - very funny. And not funny in parts - we (the UK public) are funding that dreadful NHS survey.
As for fruit flies and "the heteronormative colonial idea of purity" - I may have to withdraw my previous support for you two to discuss an academic paper, because I fear it is going to tarnish the entire landscape of academic research. And there is some good stuff going on. As well as some absolute codswallop. The codswallop does need calling out and it seems we can't rely on journal editors or academic reviewers to do that.
And, they call us transphobic, and not-feminist, and fascist-adjacent, but now they have to add in colonialist (aka racist-adjacent) even tho it's their ideology that's appropriated (colonised) a range of indigenous culture (such as Two-Spirit people) to try to prop up their ideas by dragging other people under their umbrella. It's like being shouted at by a child who's so cross they've become inarticulate and just throw any words at you, especially rude words - "and you're poo!"
Looking forward to the next podcast - more please about lesbians in films ... and maybe a mention of the hundreds of lesbians who'll be in Halifax this week for Anne Lister Festival / birthday week of events? @ALBW24 #ListerSisters
It appears that both the NHS survey team, and our venerable fruit fly academic, are taking a journey down a post-structuralist rabbit hole.
To those wishing to shake things up, post-structuralism offers the perfect playbook. No longer the need for a reasoned dialectic about the best way to live in the real world, because nothing is real.
Past foundations of belief have been deconstructed to the point that we now all live in a world of signification. And who paints the signs? A nebulous heteronomous cabal who strip us all of our autonomy and free will.
Both the NHS surveyors and fruit fly academic rely on a deconstruction of foundational principles (like biology and intellectual reason) to peddle their confusing, incoherent and useless ideas.
Here lies the paradox! Under the tenets of post-structuralism deconstruction is recursive. Employ it at your peril, because today’s ideas will be painted over by tomorrow morning.
I just tried to listen and was appalled at JB's sloppy reasoning and fuzzy definitions - it is all grease smoothed over to hide the cracks in her arguments . Kath & Julie do please take her persuasions apart and make me laugh - JB in person just made me angry at her smugness and imprecise reasoning.
Just binned the fly spray - homophobic.
😻😹!

I have not laughed so much for months!

You get better every week. Wonderful 😘
I currently have fruit flies in my fruit bowl.*
*not an euphemism

Surely it should be a Parasol rather than an Umbrella? So the batshit crazy lunacy isn’t illuminated by the sunshine?

Julie, fruit flies prefer bananas to cherries. Just saying.
🍒💣🇨🇦
Surely Sally Hines’ tweet on the TRAs at the Can-SG conference in March surely adheres to at least 10 of the Rules of Misogyny.
Been thinking … 🤔

I would love to hear your thoughts on the Ash Sarkar /Judith Butler interview - just for grins and giggles ;) Here’s the link -
Love you both-
