I remember Channel 4's opening night, with a programme called Veronica 4 Rose, which was based largely around the Newcastle lesbian group, Friggin' Little Bits, and conversations with many lesbians about living as lesbians in the early 80s. We'd never seen anything like it. Loved the interview with Caroline Spry.

Also, wasn't Rhona Cameron one of the hosts on Out in Tuesday? I seem to remember her interviewing Martina, and asking her to sign Rhona's Calvin Klein's waistband!

Was hoping for a mention of Sally Wainwright (what does Caroline think of Last Tango IN HALIFAX, never mind Paris!)

Loved hearing from Caroline Spry. As I watched, from the US, I had to call out to my spouse, who is British: she mentioned the Gateways! I think we may be about the same age as Caroline, and it was terrific to hear her recollections of those times. I also noticed for the first time a difference in the type of ear pieces used among the three of you. Generational, maybe? Anyway, great guest! Thank you!

I enjoyed the talk with Caroline Spry, and all the history in that talk and via various links. History rocks! It is through history that we define 'lesbian'. As I think Julie said, we are at risk of losing that word now.

I would love to see Maureen Duffy interviewed. She was an out lesbian in the UK before anyone else, I think. She was a writer and a social activist all her life. She is 91 and looks very frail so perhaps an interview is unrealistic. If I was a to have lesbian pin-up, it would be her. I recently discovered May Sarton, too, through her poetry and journals. May is long dead. Maureen and May are both poets but from very different backgrounds. Giving away my age again!

I usually enjoy the content of these podcasts but love them even more, when they evoke memories or lead to new things. Thanks, both of you.

Well friends, I have just listened to a 16 minute interview with then 90 years old Maureen Duffy by Caroline Sanderson on YouTube. It was to do with a writers' group she and others set up more than 45 years ago. Maureen Duffy is clearly very old but her mind and intellect are fully present. I was delighted and amazed. She is still writing.

There are parallels in our desire to preserve our integrity as lesbian women with our own history and culture today and some of the things she experienced throughout her life as a writer and environmental activist who happens to be a lesbian .... for me, anyway!

I may not have rediscovered this remarkable woman were it not for this podcast, so thanks again.

Re orchid - orchidectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of the testes so presumably orchid is not only a flower but also a testicle?

The word orchid is derived from the Greek word for testicle (orchis). Any help? 🤣🤣🤣

Etymology. Orchidsexual was named after the orchid flower. The flower is often used to symbolize love, sex, and fertility.

So who knows about the "cuddle bed" that young millennial anarchists have at their parties? No sex, just cuddles cuz we all need that. But it ain't no identity. LOL

I loved 'Out on Tuesday' back in the day. In fact I really enjoyed C4's output back then. For a straight white male it really broadened my horizons.

Sad that there is no Wikipedia page on 'Out on Tuesday'

And it was Pizza Express in Woking. Read my review...

Could Orchid -sexual be something to do with orchids being hermaphrodite plants?
