I’ve just seen a detailed account of the UK heatwaves and have been dismayed at the pictures of once green landscapes now brown and dry.

My home country, Australia, is mostly warm and dry, and we are used to heat waves, droughts and endlessly raging bushfires. You in the UK and Europe are not.

Our buildings, urban environments, and ways of life have been designed to manage (imperfectly) but yours have not.

I’ve been thinking of you all and wishing you well. I hope the world wide experience of a warming planet will galvanise us all to work for change.

It’s not only us affected. It's all creatures, especially those who have done nothing to bring this on, including bush animals and human children.

So, dear lesbian sisters, keep well and hopeful, and try to contribute something. As an elder, my contribution is limited now to being careful about consumption and to supporting groups doing purposeful work where I can.

I’ve stopped feeling guilty now. The human race has acted destructively for centuries but it is not too late, as Jane Goodall said.

Take care. 💗 🍀

Since you’re on a sports kick, why not weigh into the U.S professional women’s basketball (WNBA) drama. You both could have a lot of fun with this.

A WNBA coach shows up at a game wearing a protective trans kids t-shirt. This after Indiana Fever player Stephanie Cunningham (very cute) talked about her support for girls/women only sports – no TiMs allowed. Followed by other WNBA players waxing lyrical about how they would welcome “TG women” playing in the league. That led to 2 former NBA players submitting paperwork indicating their intention to enter the 2027 WNBA draft. And now the WNBA board is meeting to decide “what is a woman”, a question they couldn’t during the first meeting this week (but more meetings are planned). One would think they’d have an idea since the league’s been around for 30 years.

Regarding Kathleen’s point around 43:00:

What do you mean when you say that we shouldn’t tell devout Christians or Muslims how to feel about certain things (like, in this case, having homosexual teammates)?

Of course, the way people feel about something is up to them, but there are laws about how to treat minorities in the workplace, and the locker room is a workplace for professional athletes.

Is this the distinction you wanted to make, i.e. that players should not be forced to take a certain political stance? I agree with that, but I believe that one of the root causes of homophobia in men’s sports absolutely is the religiosity of many players, as well as the refusal of clubs to stand up to them because they have been too expensive to upset.

Until players are clearly signalled by their teams that homophobic behaviour will result in a suspension or fine, nothing will change.

Love the idea of you two walking, and podcasting about that, and the lesbian/food adventures along the way!

Have you considered?

or

Obviously I can hear Julie's emphatic shouts of 'No, no! Absolutely no f***ing way!' across the airwaves ... but it could be fun! Ponytails optional 🤣
